What is Q215?
Q215 is a lower-strength plain carbon structural steel in the Chinese GB/T 700 Q-series, softer and more ductile than Q235 with no deliberate alloy additions. It is chosen where forming and welding matter more than strength, and is supplied as hot-rolled bar and sections, A- and B-quality classes, normalized, annealed and cold-drawn stock, and as wire rod and welded pipe. Default values are 235 MPa yield, 390 MPa tensile, 33 % elongation and 116 HB. Design strength is low, machinability is poor because the steel is gummy, and there is no corrosion resistance; step up to Q235 when load capacity governs. Q215 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). Q215 has a yield strength of 235 MPa (34.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 390 MPa (56.6 ksi) — weaker than 96% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 33% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with Q215
Is Q215 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips; cold-drawn stock machines noticeably better.
Can Q215 be welded?
Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/ERW with E43xx (E6013/E7018-class) consumables; no preheat needed below ~30 mm.
Can Q215 be formed, bent or molded?
Very good cold formability — passes tight cold-bend tests, suitable for roll forming, deep drawing, cold heading and wire drawing.
