What is E275?

E275 is a non-alloy low-carbon steel specified in EN 10305 (1.0225) for cold-drawn precision steel tube, and should not be confused with the structural grade S275. It balances strength and weldability, giving about 310 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation, 140 HB and 77 HRB, with service temperature up to 350 °C, in +U, +A, +N, +SR, +LC and +C conditions. Machinability is moderate (score 62) and the bare surface needs protection; hard chrome plating is standard where the bore runs a seal. E315 is the option when higher tube strength is needed. E275 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). E275 has a yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 83% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with E275

Is E275 easy to machine?

Machines easily but chips are gummy in +A/+N — use sharp positive-rake carbide, generous feed and coolant; cold-drawn +C/+SR gives the cleanest chip breaking and best surface.

Can E275 be welded?

Excellent weldability by MAG, TIG, resistance and laser with ER70S-type filler; CEV ≤ ~0.40 so preheat only for heavy walls or low ambient temperature.

Can E275 be formed, bent or molded?

Bend, flare and expand in +A or +N; +C tube work-hardens and cracks in tight bends, so specify +SR/+LC when forming after drawing.
