What is E155?

E155 (W.-Nr. 1.0033) is a very low-carbon (≤0.10 % C) unalloyed engineering steel with a guaranteed minimum yield strength of 155 MPa, supplied as bar and wire in annealed, normalized, untreated, cold-drawn, light-cold-drawn and stress-relieved conditions. Engineers specify it for lightly loaded machined and cold-formed parts because of its outstanding formability (score 95) and weldability (score 95); the default condition gives 180 MPa yield, 300 MPa tensile, 35 % elongation and 95 HB. Strength is low and the soft, gummy structure limits machinability (46), and the steel rusts without coating. E195 is the nearest alternative when more strength is needed. E155 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). E155 has a yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) — weaker than 99% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with E155

Is E155 easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, generous coolant and chip breakers; cold-drawn (+C/+SR) condition machines noticeably cleaner than annealed.

Can E155 be welded?

Excellent weldability by all arc, resistance and gas processes with CEV ≈ 0.15; no preheat or PWHT needed in normal sections.

Can E155 be formed, bent or molded?

Outstanding cold formability in +A/+LC — deep drawing, cold heading, tube bending and flaring; hot forming 850–1100 °C followed by +N.

What surface finishes work on E155?

Rusts quickly, so zinc plate, phosphate, black-oxide plus oil, galvanize or paint; case carburizing/nitrocarburizing gives a hard wear surface on the soft core.
