What is S275ML?
S275ML is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) fine-grain structural steel to EN 10025-4 (1.8819), rated in the 275 MPa minimum yield class, with the L suffix guaranteeing impact toughness down to -50 °C. Engineers use it for welded structures in cold climates because the low carbon equivalent allows welding with little or no preheat; it is supplied as plate in TM thickness bands (16-40, 40-63, 63-80 mm) and as TM+Z for through-thickness loading. Default TM properties are 315 MPa yield, 430 MPa tensile, 28 % elongation and 130 HB. It has no inherent corrosion resistance and must be coated, and heating above about 580 °C erases the TMCP strengthening; S420M is the nearest higher-strength option. S275ML has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). S275ML has a yield strength of 315 MPa (45.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) — weaker than 82% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with S275ML
Is S275ML easy to machine?
Machines like ordinary low-carbon structural steel (~70 % of AISI 1212); gummy chips, prefer sharp positive-rake tools and generous coolant.
Can S275ML be welded?
Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with low CEV; keep heat input moderate (typically ≤ 3.5 kJ/mm) so the fine TMCP grain and -50 °C toughness in the HAZ are preserved, and avoid PWHT above 580 °C.
Can S275ML be formed, bent or molded?
Good cold bending and rolling; bend radii of about 1–2 t transverse are typical, and hot forming above 580 °C will erase the thermomechanical strengthening.
