What is SM490A?

SM490A is the higher-strength weldable grade of the JIS SM structural series, a C-Mn steel comparable to ASTM A572 Grade 50. It gives 365 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and about 155 HB, supplied as-rolled, normalized, TMCP or stress-relieved plate and sections for heavy welded structures. Weldability remains good but thick or highly restrained joints need preheat, and cold-bend radii are larger than for SM400A. No corrosion resistance without coating; drop to SM400A for maximum formability or move to SM520 for more strength. SM490A has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). SM490A has a yield strength of 365 MPa (52.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — weaker than 71% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with SM490A

Is SM490A easy to machine?

Machines like ordinary C-Mn structural steel at ~60 % of AISI 1212; use rigid setups and coolant, expect stringy chips in as-rolled plate.

Can SM490A be welded?

Excellent weldability by SMAW/GMAW/SAW with ~E49xx / ER70S-class consumables; preheat 50–100 °C for thick sections or high restraint.

Can SM490A be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bend at r ≥ 2t (≥3t across the rolling direction for thick plate); hot forming 900–1050 °C followed by normalizing is preferred for tight radii.
