What is E275M?

E275M (1.8895) is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) fine-grain structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, supplied in M, ML, MH, MLH, cold-drawn (CD) and stress-relieved (SR) conditions. It is used for welded machine and structural parts where fabrication ease matters more than strength; typical values are 305 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and 135 HB. Weldability (CEV ≤ 0.34) and cold formability are its strong points, but the TMCP strengthening is lost above about 580 °C, so hot forming or high-temperature PWHT requires re-qualification. E355M is the obvious step up when more yield strength is needed. E275M has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). E275M has a yield strength of 305 MPa (44.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 84% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with E275M

Is E275M easy to machine?

Machines like a soft low-carbon steel — use sharp positive-rake carbide, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips; cold-drawn bar gives better finish.

Can E275M be welded?

Excellent weldability (CEV ≤0.34): SMAW/GMAW/SAW with low-hydrogen consumables of matching 275–355 MPa class, little or no preheat below ~40 mm; keep heat input moderate and PWHT below 580 °C to retain TMCP properties.

Can E275M be formed, bent or molded?

Very good cold formability — press braking to ~1.5–2 t inner radius transverse to rolling direction; hot forming above ~580 °C erases the thermomechanical strengthening and requires re-qualification.

What is the yield strength of E275M?

E275M has a typical yield strength of 305 MPa (44.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 84% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.

Is E275M easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (60/100, better than 83% of steel grades). Machines like a soft low-carbon steel — use sharp positive-rake carbide, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips; cold-drawn bar gives better finish.

Can E275M be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100). Excellent weldability (CEV ≤0.34): SMAW/GMAW/SAW with low-hydrogen consumables of matching 275–355 MPa class, little or no preheat below ~40 mm; keep heat input moderate and PWHT below 580 °C to retain TMCP properties.
