Compare all 5 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
T5, stress relieved by stretching | Low-cost stabilising age (~225 °C) that raises yield and improves machinability/dimensional stability without solution-treat distortion. | 138 | 172 | 2 | 60 HB | 43 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and artificially aged | Standard structural condition: best combination of strength and ductility for wheels, housings and aerospace castings. | 186 | 262 | 5 | 80 HB | 39 % IACS |
Solution treated and strongly over-aged | Softest heat-treated condition; chosen when residual-stress relief and long-term dimensional/thermal stability outweigh strength. | 186 | 196 | 3 | 60 HB | 41 % IACS |
T6 variant, underaged | Higher-strength ageing schedule used on A356 premium-quality permanent-mould and low-pressure castings. | 207 | 283 | 10 | 90 HB | 39 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and overaged (stabilized) | Over-aged for dimensional stability and higher yield at slight ductility cost; suits parts machined to tight tolerance or run warm. | 207 | 234 | 2 | 75 HB | 40 % IACS |
What is 356?
356 (AlSi7Mg) is the workhorse heat-treatable aluminium–silicon–magnesium casting alloy, used for sand, permanent-mould and low-pressure castings such as wheels, cylinder heads, pump and valve bodies and structural aerospace castings. It combines excellent castability and fluidity, good pressure tightness, good weldability and good corrosion resistance with useful T6 strength after solution treating and ageing. Limits are moderate absolute strength, sensitivity of ductility to iron content and dendrite/porosity quality (hence the low-Fe A356 variant), abrasive machining behaviour from the eutectic silicon, and a grey, non-decorative anodic film. 356 has a density of 2.67 g/cm³ (0.0965 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of aluminum grades. It melts at 557°C (1,035 °F). 356 has a yield strength of 186 MPa (27 ksi) and a tensile strength of 262 MPa (38 ksi) — weaker than 52% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 5% and the elastic modulus is 72.4 GPa (10.5 Msi).
What is 356 used for?
- Cast automotive wheels
- Cylinder heads and cylinder blocks
- Pump housings
- Valve bodies
- Structural aerospace castings
- Low-pressure cast intake manifolds
- Gearbox and transmission housings
Limitations
- Limited formability — 10/100, worse than 80% of aluminum grades
- Hard to polish — 45/100, worse than 76% of aluminum grades

Manufacturability8
356's machinability is very good (70/100, better than 72% of aluminum grades); weldability very good (78/100); formability not recommended (10/100).

Working with 356
Is 356 easy to machine?
Machines freely with sharp PCD or polished-flute carbide tooling and flood coolant; eutectic silicon is abrasive, so PCD is preferred for volume, and T6/T7 cuts cleaner than as-cast F.
Can 356 be welded?
Readily TIG/MIG welded with 4043 or 4145 filler; re-solution and re-age locally welded structural castings, and avoid welding into gas-porous or heavily impregnated regions.
Can 356 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent fluidity and pressure tightness in sand, permanent-mould and low-pressure casting; Sr/Na modification plus Ti-B grain refining and directional solidification are key to ductility, and thin risers/hot spots cause shrinkage porosity.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to 356. Every 356 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
