What is EN AC-41000?

EN AC-41000 (AlSi2MgTi) is a low-silicon Al-Si-Mg casting alloy with titanium grain refinement, supplied F, T6 or T6-K. The 2% Si level gives 170 W/m·K thermal conductivity, 42% IACS electrical conductivity and weldability and anodizing behaviour close to wrought 6000 series, which is why it is used for electrical and welded cast parts. Strength is moderate at 130 MPa yield, 190 MPa tensile and 5% elongation, and fluidity is poor with a high hot-tearing tendency. Thin or intricate sections are better cast in EN AC-42100. EN AC-41000 has a density of 2.67 g/cm³ (0.0965 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of aluminum grades. It melts at 610°C (1,130 °F). EN AC-41000 has a yield strength of 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 190 MPa (27.6 ksi) — weaker than 73% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 5% and the elastic modulus is 72 GPa (10.4 Msi).

Working with EN AC-41000

Is EN AC-41000 easy to machine?

Machines like a soft wrought 6000-series alloy — sharp polished-flute carbide tools, high speed, generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and gummy chips.

Can EN AC-41000 be welded?

Very good TIG/MIG weldability with 4043 or 5356 filler; re-solution + age locally welded structural parts to restore T6 strength.

Can EN AC-41000 be formed, bent or molded?

Poor fluidity and high hot-tearing tendency — use thick sections, generous fillets, strong feeders and controlled mould temperature; not suited to high-pressure die casting.
