What is EN AC-44100?
EN AC-44100 (AlSi12(b); ADC1, 413.0, ZL102, AC3A) is a higher-purity eutectic AlSi12 casting alloy with tighter impurity control than the (a) variant, used as-cast (F) in die, sand and chill moulds. It is selected for pressure die castings that need top fluidity and low shrinkage, giving 270 MPa tensile, 140 MPa yield, 2 % elongation, 62 HB, 130 W/m·K and 31 % IACS. Elongation is low, the alloy does not respond to heat treatment, service is limited to 150 °C, and die castings blister if solution treated or fusion welded. EN AC-44500 tolerates more iron for high-volume die casting. EN AC-44100 has a density of 2.65 g/cm³ (0.0957 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of aluminum grades. It melts at 574°C (1,065 °F). EN AC-44100 has a yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) — weaker than 70% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 2% and the elastic modulus is 74 GPa (10.7 Msi).
What is EN AC-44100 used for?
- die-cast housings
- thin-wall automotive parts
- pressure-tight components
Limitations
- Hard to polish — 40/100, worse than 91% of aluminum grades
- Low fracture toughness — 16 MPa·√m (14.6 ksi·√in), worse than 89% of aluminum grades
- Limited ductility — 2%, worse than 87% of aluminum grades
- Limited formability — 10/100, worse than 80% of aluminum grades

Working with EN AC-44100
Is EN AC-44100 easy to machine?
Fair machinability — use PCD or coated carbide with high speed, positive rake and flood coolant; eutectic silicon is abrasive and tool wear, not cutting force, limits life.
Can EN AC-44100 be welded?
TIG/MIG weldable with AlSi12 (ER4047) filler for sand/permanent-mould parts; die castings often blister from entrapped gas, so prefer mechanical joining or vacuum-assisted castings.
Can EN AC-44100 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent castability: eutectic freezing gives top fluidity, low shrinkage (~1.1 %) and good pressure tightness in walls down to ~1 mm; modify with Sr/Na and avoid slow cooling to keep silicon fine.

What surface finishes work on EN AC-44100?
Best finished by chromate/conversion coating, powder coat or paint; decorative anodizing turns dark grey and patchy, while hard anodizing and shot blasting work acceptably.
