What is AC9B?
AC9B is a JIS hypereutectic Al-Si piston alloy (A390.0) with the Cu/Ni/Mg balance shifted relative to AC9A to tune mechanical properties. It provides 220 MPa tensile, 200 MPa yield, 140 HB, 130 W/m·K, 25% IACS and a 250 °C service limit, cast by permanent-mould, gravity or squeeze casting and supplied in F, T5, T6 and T7. Machinability of 28 and 0.5% elongation are the limits: PCD tooling is needed, the alloy is brittle, and fusion welding is repair-only because of hot cracking and porosity. AC8A is the option where machining cost matters more than wear resistance. AC9B has a density of 2.68 g/cm³ (0.0968 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of aluminum grades. It melts at 507°C (945 °F). AC9B has a yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 220 MPa (31.9 ksi) — stronger than 53% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 0.5% and the elastic modulus is 82 GPa (11.9 Msi).

Working with AC9B
Is AC9B easy to machine?
Highly abrasive primary silicon — use PCD or diamond-coated tooling, high speed / light feed with flood coolant; carbide life is very short.
Can AC9B be welded?
Poor fusion weldability (hot cracking, porosity, Cu pickup); repair only with 4047/4145-type filler and preheat, avoid on load-bearing sections.
Can AC9B be formed, bent or molded?
Permanent-mold/gravity or squeeze cast at 730–780 °C with phosphorus modification and controlled cooling to keep primary Si fine and evenly distributed.

What surface finishes work on AC9B?
Hard anodizing or ferrous/tin coatings on ring grooves and skirts for wear; decorative anodizing looks dark and mottled, so painting or shot-blast finishes are usual.

AC9B — frequently asked
What is AC9B used for?
AC9B is typically used for high-performance pistons, cylinder liners, wear-resistant sleeves, compressor pistons, pump and valve wear plates and high-temperature engine wear parts. In short: hardest AC casting alloy; hypereutectic liner grade; diamond tooling required.
