What is C355.0?
C355.0 is a high-integrity Al-Si5Cu1.3Mg casting alloy in the ANSI/AA 3xx.x family, with tighter impurity control than 355.0 and heat treated to T6, T61, T62 or T7 for structural service. In the default T6-class condition it gives 275 MPa tensile, 207 MPa yield, 4% elongation, 85 HB and a 71 GPa modulus with 151 W/m·K conductivity, poured as sand, permanent-mold and investment castings for aerospace and automotive housings. The copper content lowers corrosion resistance (score 48) and raises hot-cracking risk in repair welds, and service is capped near 150 °C; A356.0-T6 is preferred when corrosion resistance outweighs strength. C355.0 has a density of 2.71 g/cm³ (0.0979 lb/in³), heavier than 51% of aluminum grades. It melts at 546°C (1,015 °F). C355.0 has a yield strength of 207 MPa (30 ksi) and a tensile strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) — stronger than 55% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 4% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).
What is C355.0 used for?
- aircraft housings
- wheels
- structural brackets
- gearbox cases
Limitations
- Limited formability — 10/100, worse than 80% of aluminum grades

Working with C355.0
Is C355.0 easy to machine?
Machines well in T6/T61 with polished-flute carbide, high speed and flood coolant; the eutectic Si is abrasive, so use PCD for long production runs.
Can C355.0 be welded?
TIG/MIG repair with 4043 or 4145 filler is practical but the Cu content raises hot-crack sensitivity — re-solution and re-age after structural repairs.
Can C355.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand and permanent-mold (also investment) casting alloy with excellent fluidity and pressure tightness; needs good gating/chill practice and clean, degassed melt to reach rated properties — HIP is often used on aerospace parts.
