What is 514.0?
514.0 (A05140) is an Al-Mg sand casting alloy with about 4% Mg, equivalent to British LM5, used in the as-cast F temper. It combines corrosion resistance (80/100), good machinability and an attractive anodized appearance at 170 MPa tensile strength, 85 MPa yield, 9% elongation and 50 HB, and is common in marine and food-handling castings. Thermal conductivity is 138 W/m·K and maximum service temperature 120 °C. Fluidity is only moderate and the melt is oxide-film and hot-tear sensitive, so Al-Si alloys such as 356.0 remain easier to cast where appearance is less critical. 514.0 has a density of 2.65 g/cm³ (0.0957 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of aluminum grades. It melts at 599°C (1,110 °F). 514.0 has a yield strength of 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 170 MPa (24.7 ksi) — weaker than 88% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 9% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with 514.0
Is 514.0 easy to machine?
Machines cleanly with sharp positive-rake carbide tooling and high speeds; the Mg-rich matrix gives good chip break and an excellent as-machined finish, but avoid built-up edge by using generous coolant/lubrication.
Can 514.0 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW welded and repair-welded with 5356 (or 5183) filler; preheat lightly, avoid Al-Si fillers which darken on anodizing and embrittle the Al-Mg matrix.
Can 514.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand casting only — needs tight melt protection (flux/cover gas, low turbulence), good gating and generous feeders because fluidity is moderate and hot-tear/oxide-film sensitivity is high.
514.0 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
