What is ZL207?

ZL207 (ZAlCu5Ni1Co1Mn1, close to 242.0) is an Al-Cu casting alloy with nickel, cobalt and manganese additions that retain strength at temperature, supplied F, T1 or T1(J). It is used for engine and turbine castings operating to 350 °C, the highest service limit in this ZL group; default values are 185 MPa tensile, 150 MPa yield, 1.5 % elongation, 80 HB, 130 W/m·K and 32 % IACS. Ductility and corrosion resistance are low (corrosion score 33), and the Cu-rich, wide-freezing-range composition is hot-crack sensitive and effectively not repair-weldable. Use ZL110 where 200 °C service is sufficient. ZL207 has a density of 2.85 g/cm³ (0.103 lb/in³), heavier than 96% of aluminum grades. It melts at 545°C (1,013 °F). ZL207 has a yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 185 MPa (26.8 ksi) — weaker than 65% of aluminum grades. Chemical Resistance SummaryAdequate in dry air and fuels/lubricants at elevated temperature; poor in chloride-bearing or humid marine service and in acids/alkalis — Cu-rich phases promote pitting and intergranular attack, so protective coating or anodic film is normal practice.

Working with ZL207

Is ZL207 easy to machine?

Machines easily with sharp carbide tooling and high speeds, but hard RE/Cu intermetallics accelerate edge wear and porosity can be exposed on finish cuts.

Can ZL207 be welded?

Poor fusion weldability — Cu-rich, wide-freezing-range alloy is highly hot-crack sensitive; repair only by TIG with Al-Cu filler and immediate re-aging, otherwise use mechanical joints.

Can ZL207 be formed, bent or molded?

Casting alloy only: use generous fillets, directional solidification and chills to counter hot tearing; pour ~700–730 °C with degassing and RE-safe fluxing, no cold forming.

What surface finishes work on ZL207?

Best protected by hard anodizing, chromate-free conversion coating or heat-resistant paint; decorative anodizing gives dark, blotchy films because of Cu and RE phases.

ZL207 is typically used for high-temperature engine castings, turbine housings, air-cooled cylinder heads, pistons and piston crowns, exhaust-side brackets and adapters and hot-running pump housings. In short: highest-temperature ZL alloy; 350 °C service capability; not practically weldable.

What is the yield strength of ZL207?

ZL207 has a typical yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 185 MPa (26.8 ksi) — weaker than 65% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is ZL207 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (62/100, better than 55% of aluminum grades). Machines easily with sharp carbide tooling and high speeds, but hard RE/Cu intermetallics accelerate edge wear and porosity can be exposed on finish cuts.

Can ZL207 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Poor fusion weldability — Cu-rich, wide-freezing-range alloy is highly hot-crack sensitive; repair only by TIG with Al-Cu filler and immediate re-aging, otherwise use mechanical joints.

What surface finishes work on ZL207?

Best protected by hard anodizing, chromate-free conversion coating or heat-resistant paint; decorative anodizing gives dark, blotchy films because of Cu and RE phases.

Can ZL207 be formed, bent or molded?

Casting alloy only: use generous fillets, directional solidification and chills to counter hot tearing; pour ~700–730 °C with degassing and RE-safe fluxing, no cold forming.

What is the maximum service temperature of ZL207?

ZL207 is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ZL207-T1 and ZL207-F?
