What is 213.0?
213.0 (CS74A) is an older Al-Cu-Si sand and permanent-mold casting alloy used as-cast in the F temper for general-purpose machinery castings. It offers moderate strength — 105 MPa yield, 165 MPa tensile, HB 70 — with a machinability rating of 82, 120 W/m·K thermal conductivity and 175 °C service capability. Elongation is only 1.5%, so the alloy tolerates no plastic deformation; the wide freezing range makes it shrinkage and hot-tear prone, welding is not recommended for structure, and anodized appearance is poor because of the copper. Modern Al-Si-Cu casting alloys such as 319.0 are the practical substitute where availability is a concern. 213.0 has a density of 2.95 g/cm³ (0.107 lb/in³), heavier than 99% of aluminum grades. It melts at 545°C (1,013 °F). 213.0 has a yield strength of 105 MPa (15.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 165 MPa (23.9 ksi) — weaker than 84% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 1.5% and the elastic modulus is 73 GPa (10.6 Msi).

Working with 213.0
Is 213.0 easy to machine?
Free machining with sharp carbide or PCD tools, high speed and light feed; the Cu/Zn content gives short chips and good finish with soluble-oil coolant.
Can 213.0 be welded?
Not recommended for structural welds — high Cu makes it hot-crack sensitive; repair with 4145/4043 filler only for cosmetic defects, or use mechanical joining.
Can 213.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Sand and permanent-mold casting only; needs generous risers and controlled solidification because of wide freezing range and shrinkage/hot-tear tendency; not heat treated in service (F temper).

What surface finishes work on 213.0?
Do not rely on anodizing (dark, patchy film); use chromate/phosphate conversion plus primer and paint, or nickel/zinc-based plating over a suitable strike, for corrosion protection.
