What is EN AC-42200?

EN AC-42200 (AlSi7Mg0.6) is a hypoeutectic Al-Si casting alloy with raised magnesium for stronger Mg2Si precipitation hardening than AlSi7Mg0.3; it corresponds to A357.0 and AC4CH. In T6 it gives about 320 MPa tensile, 250 MPa yield, 4 % elongation and 105 HB, with 72 GPa modulus and 151 W/m·K, and is produced by sand, permanent-mould, low-pressure and investment casting for load-carrying parts. Full ductility depends on low Fe, Sr/Na modification and directional solidification; service is limited to about 150 °C and silicon particles rule out bright decorative anodizing. EN AC-42100 (AlSi7Mg0.3) is the lower-strength, more forgiving alternative. EN AC-42200 has a density of 2.67 g/cm³ (0.0965 lb/in³), lighter than 78% of aluminum grades. It melts at 557°C (1,035 °F). EN AC-42200 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) — stronger than 65% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 4% and the elastic modulus is 72 GPa (10.4 Msi).

Working with EN AC-42200

Is EN AC-42200 easy to machine?

Machines well with sharp PCD or polished carbide tooling and high speeds; free-machining is limited by abrasive eutectic Si and by gumminess in the F/T5 states, so prefer T6/T64 for good finish.

Can EN AC-42200 be welded?

Readily TIG/MIG welded with 4043/4047 (or 5356 where colour match after anodize matters); re-solution + age locally or fully to restore T6 strength across the weld.

Can EN AC-42200 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent fluidity for sand, permanent-mould, low-pressure and investment casting; needs Sr/Na modification, good directional solidification and low Fe to reach full elongation.
