What is EN AC-44300?

EN AC-44300 (AlSi12(Fe)(a)) is an iron-tolerant eutectic AlSi12 alloy for high-pressure die casting, where the raised iron level reduces soldering to the die; it is supplied and used in the as-cast F condition. Typical values are 260 MPa tensile, 140 MPa yield, 2 % elongation, 60 HB, 121 W/m·K and 31 % IACS. Iron-bearing intermetallics cut ductility and weldability, thermal conductivity is below that of low-iron AlSi12, and service temperature stays near 150 °C. EN AC-44100 (AlSi12(b)) is the low-iron alternative when ductility or conductivity matters. EN AC-44300 has a density of 2.65 g/cm³ (0.0957 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of aluminum grades. It melts at 574°C (1,065 °F). EN AC-44300 has a yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) — weaker than 70% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 2% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

What is EN AC-44300 used for?

Limitations

  • Low fracture toughness — 15 MPa·√m (13.7 ksi·√in), worse than 93% of aluminum grades
  • Hard to polish — 40/100, worse than 91% of aluminum grades

Working with EN AC-44300

Is EN AC-44300 easy to machine?

Use PCD or diamond-coated carbide with high speed and flood coolant — the eutectic Si is highly abrasive and gummy chips can weld to uncoated tools.

Can EN AC-44300 be welded?

TIG/MIG with ER4047 filler works metallurgically, but high-pressure die castings blister from entrapped gas; prefer vacuum/high-integrity castings or mechanical joining.

Can EN AC-44300 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent HPDC fluidity for walls down to ~1 mm; keep die temperature and gate velocity controlled and avoid heat treatment above ~250 °C to prevent blistering.
