What is B390.0?
B390.0 is a secondary (recycled) hypereutectic Al-Si17Cu4 die casting alloy, a relaxed-impurity variant of A390.0 in which primary silicon particles carry the wear resistance. It is used as-cast (F) or in T5/T6/T7 for die castings that must resist scuffing and hold dimensions hot: 280 MPa tensile, 240 MPa yield, 120 HB, 134 W/m·K and service to 200 °C. Elongation is only 1%, so the alloy is brittle and notch-sensitive, machinability rates 25, and it is effectively non-weldable; A380.0 is the tougher general-purpose die casting choice. B390.0 has a density of 2.73 g/cm³ (0.0986 lb/in³), heavier than 61% of aluminum grades. It melts at 507°C (945 °F). B390.0 has a yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 280 MPa (40.6 ksi) — stronger than 63% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 1% and the elastic modulus is 81 GPa (11.7 Msi).

Working with B390.0
Is B390.0 easy to machine?
Treat as an abrasive material: PCD or diamond-coated tooling, high speed / light feed, flood coolant; carbide life is short and honing is standard for bores.
Can B390.0 be welded?
Effectively non-weldable for structural joints — high Si+Cu causes hot cracking and die-cast gas porosity blisters; use mechanical fastening or adhesives.
Can B390.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Die cast only (also permanent mould/squeeze cast); needs controlled melt superheat and moderate holding temperature to keep primary Si finely distributed, and steel dies wear fast.

What surface finishes work on B390.0?
Honing/lapping exposes hard Si for excellent bore wear; anodizing looks dark and mottled, so hard-coat anodize, electroless nickel or paint are preferred.
