What is 358.0?
358.0 is an Al-Si-Mg sand and permanent-mold casting alloy in the ANSI/AA 3xx.x series, closely related to 356/357 and strengthened by Mg2Si precipitation in the F, T5, T6, T61, T62 and T7 conditions. Engineers use it for moderate-strength, pressure-tight castings with good fluidity: 275 MPa yield, 345 MPa tensile, 5% elongation, 100 HB, 72 GPa modulus, 151 W/m·K and 39% IACS. Service is limited to about 150 °C, corrosion resistance is moderate (score 58), and the beryllium content demands fume extraction when welding or grinding. 356.0 or A357.0 are the nearest alternatives where a beryllium-free chemistry is required. 358.0 has a density of 2.68 g/cm³ (0.0968 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of aluminum grades. It melts at 557°C (1,035 °F). 358.0 has a yield strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi) — stronger than 70% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 5% and the elastic modulus is 72 GPa (10.4 Msi).
What is 358.0 used for?
- General-purpose sand castings
- Permanent-mold pump and valve bodies
- Pressure-tight manifold and housing castings
- Aerospace brackets and fittings in T6
- Investment-cast structural components
- Gearbox cases and covers
- Automotive suspension castings
Limitations
- Limited formability — 10/100, worse than 80% of aluminum grades

Working with 358.0
Is 358.0 easy to machine?
Machines well with sharp PCD or polished carbide tooling, high speed and flood coolant; the hard eutectic Si is abrasive so HSS tool life is short.
Can 358.0 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW with 4043 or 4047 filler is routine for repair, but the joint must be re-solution treated and aged to recover T6 properties; beryllium fume extraction is mandatory.
Can 358.0 be formed, bent or molded?
A casting alloy only — excellent fluidity and pressure tightness in sand, permanent-mold and investment casting; use chills and directional solidification, HIP for aerospace class-A parts.

What surface finishes work on 358.0?
Takes sulfuric and hard-coat anodizing for protection (dark grey cosmetic due to Si), chromate/trivalent conversion coating and primer-paint systems; bright decorative anodizing is not practical.
