What is EN AC-43400?

EN AC-43400 (AlSi10Mg(Fe)) is an AlSi10Mg variant with deliberately higher iron for high-pressure die casting, where the Fe content reduces die soldering. Typical properties are 260 MPa tensile, 155 MPa yield, 2 % elongation, 75 HB, 130 W/m·K thermal conductivity and 27 % IACS, in F, T5 and T6 conditions, and it is used for thin-wall, high-volume housings and covers. The iron-rich phases cut ductility and fusion weldability (rated 35), service is limited to about 150 °C, and entrapped gas normally prevents solution treatment. Use EN AC-43500 (AlSi10MnMg) for structural, weldable or heat-treatable die castings. EN AC-43400 has a density of 2.66 g/cm³ (0.0961 lb/in³), lighter than 84% of aluminum grades. It melts at 557°C (1,035 °F). EN AC-43400 has a yield strength of 155 MPa (22.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) — weaker than 63% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 2% and the elastic modulus is 73 GPa (10.6 Msi).

Limitations

  • Limited ductility — 2%, worse than 87% of aluminum grades
  • Low electrical conductivity — 27 % IACS, worse than 86% of aluminum grades

Chemical & Environmental3

Galvanic Potential (seawater, vs SCE)-0.83 V
Corrosion ResistanceGood55/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryGood in neutral atmospheres, fresh water and most organic media; attacked by strong acids and by alkalis (pH >9); iron- and silicon-rich intermetallics act as local cathodes, so galvanic coupling with steel/copper and chloride exposure need coating or passivation.

Working with EN AC-43400

Is EN AC-43400 easy to machine?

Machines easily but the eutectic Si is abrasive — use PCD or polished-flute carbide, high speed, low feed pressure; watch for subsurface porosity when machining sealing faces.

Can EN AC-43400 be welded?

Poor for fusion welding of conventional HPDC due to entrapped gas blistering; use FSW, cold-metal-transfer with ER4043/ER4047, mechanical joining or adhesive bonding instead.

Can EN AC-43400 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent HPDC alloy: high fluidity for <2 mm walls, low hot-tearing risk, and the elevated Fe content markedly reduces die soldering and ejection problems.

What surface finishes work on EN AC-43400?

Best finished by chromate-free conversion coating, e-coat or powder coat; decorative anodizing gives a dark grey mottled film, and porosity can require impregnation before plating.

What is the yield strength of EN AC-43400?

EN AC-43400 has a typical yield strength of 155 MPa (22.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) — weaker than 63% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is EN AC-43400 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (65/100, better than 62% of aluminum grades). Machines easily but the eutectic Si is abrasive — use PCD or polished-flute carbide, high speed, low feed pressure; watch for subsurface porosity when machining sealing faces.

Can EN AC-43400 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). Poor for fusion welding of conventional HPDC due to entrapped gas blistering; use FSW, cold-metal-transfer with ER4043/ER4047, mechanical joining or adhesive bonding instead.

What surface finishes work on EN AC-43400?
