What is 513.0?

513.0 (A05130) is an Al-Zn-Mg permanent mold casting alloy in the ANSI/AA 5xx.x series, formerly designated A514.0, that develops its properties by natural ageing rather than heat treatment. As-cast F temper gives 185 MPa tensile strength, 110 MPa yield, 7% elongation and 60 HB, with 138 W/m·K conductivity, making it useful for gravity die-cast hardware and housings that must resist corrosion and machine freely. Maximum service temperature is 100 °C, and castability is the main constraint: fluidity is poor and hot-tear sensitivity is high. For sand-cast parts in the same corrosion class, 514.0 is the closer choice. 513.0 has a density of 2.68 g/cm³ (0.0968 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of aluminum grades. It melts at 582°C (1,080 °F). 513.0 has a yield strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) and a tensile strength of 185 MPa (26.8 ksi) — weaker than 81% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 7% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with 513.0

Is 513.0 easy to machine?

Machines very freely with sharp polished-flute carbide tooling and generous rake; chips are long and gummy, so use high speed, flood emulsion and chip breakers.

Can 513.0 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW with 5356 (Al-5Mg) filler gives sound repairs; preheat sparingly and avoid restraint because the high-Mg matrix is hot-crack sensitive.

Can 513.0 be formed, bent or molded?

Permanent-mold (gravity die) casting only — poor fluidity and strong hot-tear tendency demand generous fillets, controlled mold temperature and well-fed risers; melt must be protected against Mg oxidation/dross.
