Compare all 6 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
As cast, sand casting | Sand-cast prototypes or large low-volume parts; coarsest structure, lowest strength and ductility of the as-cast conditions. | 125 | 190 | 6 | 65 HB | 29 % IACS |
Annealed | Anneal used when crash-relevant elongation, self-pierce riveting or clinching of the casting matters more than strength. | 130 | 235 | 20 | 65 HB | 30 % IACS |
As cast, permanent mould (gravity die) casting | Gravity permanent-mould variant for thicker sections; slower solidification coarsens the structure so strength drops well below HPDC values. | 140 | 220 | 9 | 70 HB | 29 % IACS |
FDefault As fabricated | Standard commercial condition: thin-wall HPDC parts used as cast, no heat treatment, best strength/ductility combination. | 185 | 285 | 12 | 85 HB | 28 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and artificially aged | Only for low-gas (vacuum-assisted HPDC) or gravity castings — conventional die castings blister; gives the highest strength but reduced ductility. | 220 | 320 | 9 | 100 HB | 27 % IACS |
Cooled from hot working and artificially aged | Short low-temperature age of the as-cast part to raise proof strength and stabilise dimensions, at the cost of some elongation; safe for HPDC (no blistering). | 230 | 305 | 8 | 95 HB | 29 % IACS |
What is EN AC-51500?
EN AC-51500 (AlMg5Si2Mn) is a manganese-modified Al-Mg-Si casting alloy from the EN 1706 family, mainly high-pressure die cast and listed in F, F-K, F-S, O, T5 and T6 conditions. As-cast values of 185 MPa yield, 285 MPa tensile, 12% elongation and 85 HB let thin-wall die castings be self-pierce riveted or clinched without heat treatment. Thermal conductivity is 100 W/m·K, service temperature 100 °C, and the high Mg content demands melt protection and rules out flux brazing. AlSi10MnMg-type die-casting alloys are the closest alternative where castability matters more than anodizing. EN AC-51500 has a density of 2.65 g/cm³ (0.0957 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of aluminum grades. It melts at 575°C (1,067 °F). EN AC-51500 has a yield strength of 185 MPa (26.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) — weaker than 53% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 70 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with EN AC-51500
Is EN AC-51500 easy to machine?
Machines like a soft 5000-series alloy — sharp polished-flute carbide tools, high speed, generous coolant/lubrication to avoid built-up edge and gummy chips.
Can EN AC-51500 be welded?
MIG/TIG weldable with AlMg filler (ER5356/5183); vacuum or low-gas die castings weld best, conventional HPDC can blow porosity in the weld pool.
Can EN AC-51500 be formed, bent or molded?
High-pressure die casting with fast fill, good melt protection (Mg oxidation) and low-Fe metal; thin walls down to ~2 mm achieve the best strength-ductility; suitable for self-pierce riveting and clinching in F/O condition.
