What is B443.0?
B443.0 is a secondary-grade Al-Si5 sand and permanent-mold casting alloy in the ANSI/AA 4xx.x family, with relaxed impurity limits for general-purpose, non-critical castings. It is chosen for cost and castability rather than strength — 130 MPa tensile, 55 MPa yield, 8% elongation, 40 HB — with 142 W/m·K conductivity and use to about 150 °C; conditions on file are as-sand-cast (F-S), as-permanent-mold-cast (F-P) and annealed (O). It is not heat treatable to higher strength and machinability rates only 38 because of gummy chip behaviour, so A356.0-T6 is the alternative where strength or machined finish matters. B443.0 has a density of 2.68 g/cm³ (0.0968 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of aluminum grades. It melts at 575°C (1,067 °F). B443.0 has a yield strength of 55 MPa (7.98 ksi) and a tensile strength of 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) — weaker than 94% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with B443.0
Is B443.0 easy to machine?
Gummy with long chips at low Si content — use sharp polished-flute carbide or PCD, high speed, low feed, and flood coolant; expect abrasive tool wear from eutectic Si.
Can B443.0 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with 4043 (Al-Si5) filler, essentially matching composition; low hot-cracking sensitivity, but as-cast strength is not recovered by post-weld heat treatment.
Can B443.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent fluidity and feeding for thin, intricate sand and permanent-mold castings; modify with Na or Sr for finer eutectic and use chills to raise local ductility.
