What is EN AC-48100?
EN AC-48100 (AlSi17Cu4Mg, A390.0/AC9A) is a hypereutectic Al-Si casting alloy whose primary silicon particles give very low wear rates and low thermal expansion, available in F, T5, T6 and T7 under EN 1706. Engineers specify it for cast cylinder liners, bores and compressor components that run hot and in sliding contact, at 190 MPa tensile, 180 MPa yield, 105 HB, 134 W/m·K and 250 °C maximum service. Elongation is 0.8%, machinability is the lowest of the cast Al-Si group (score 32) and welding is hot-crack and porosity prone. EN AC-48000 AlSi12CuNiMg is the alternative when machinability and ductility matter more than wear. EN AC-48100 has a density of 2.73 g/cm³ (0.0986 lb/in³), heavier than 61% of aluminum grades. It melts at 507°C (945 °F). EN AC-48100 has a yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 190 MPa (27.6 ksi) — weaker than 54% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 0.8% and the elastic modulus is 81 GPa (11.7 Msi).

Working with EN AC-48100
Is EN AC-48100 easy to machine?
Use PCD or CBN tooling with high speed, light feed and flood coolant — primary Si destroys carbide edges quickly; honed bores can be exposed to give a hard Si running surface.
Can EN AC-48100 be welded?
Poor: high Si plus 4–5 % Cu makes it hot-crack and porosity prone; repair only with Al-Si (4047/4145) filler and preheat, avoid structural welds.
Can EN AC-48100 be formed, bent or molded?
Casting-only alloy — pour hot (≈730–800 °C) with phosphorus modification and controlled cooling to keep primary Si fine and evenly distributed; suitable for HPDC, permanent mould and squeeze casting.
