What is EN AC-51400?

EN AC-51400 (AlMg5(Si), ZL303) is a silicon-modified Al-Mg casting alloy in the EN 1706 family, used as-cast in sand (S-F) or permanent-mould (K-F) condition. The Si addition improves castability over plain AlMg5 while keeping high corrosion resistance (80/100) and a bright anodizing response, with typical values of 100 MPa yield, 160 MPa tensile, 3% elongation and 55 HB. Strength is modest, ductility low and service limited to 100 °C, and the long freezing range makes oxide films and shrinkage porosity a real risk. Where higher strength is needed, a heat-treatable Al-Si-Mg casting alloy is the usual alternative. EN AC-51400 has a density of 2.61 g/cm³ (0.0943 lb/in³), lighter than 97% of aluminum grades. It melts at 570°C (1,058 °F). EN AC-51400 has a yield strength of 100 MPa (14.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) — weaker than 84% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 70 GPa (10.2 Msi).

Working with EN AC-51400

Is EN AC-51400 easy to machine?

Machines cleanly with sharp positive-rake carbide tools and generous coolant; Al-Mg is gummy, so use high speed, polished flutes and chip evacuation to avoid built-up edge.

Can EN AC-51400 be welded?

Readily TIG/MIG welded with 5356 or 5183 filler; clean oxide thoroughly, preheat only lightly and avoid Si-rich 4043 filler which embrittles high-Mg joints.

Can EN AC-51400 be formed, bent or molded?

Cast only — melt under cover/flux with low turbulence and good degassing; keep pouring temperature ~700–730 °C and use chills/generous feeders since long-freezing Al-Mg is prone to oxide films and shrinkage porosity.
