What is 296.0?
296.0 (UNS A02960) is a permanent-mold Al-Cu-Si casting alloy in the ANSI/AA 2xx.x family, supplied in T4, T6 and T7 tempers and closely related to 295.0 but cast for improved pressure tightness. Typical values are 179 MPa yield, 275 MPa tensile, 5% elongation, 95 HB, 138 W/m·K thermal conductivity and 35% IACS, with service to 150 °C. The 4-5% copper makes fusion welding inadvisable and leaves corrosion protection dependent on coatings. 295.0 is the sand-casting equivalent when tooling cost rules out permanent mold. 296.0 has a density of 2.8 g/cm³ (0.101 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of aluminum grades. It melts at 521°C (970 °F). 296.0 has a yield strength of 179 MPa (26 ksi) and a tensile strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) — weaker than 55% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 5% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with 296.0
Is 296.0 easy to machine?
Machines very well with carbide tools, high speed and low feed; free-machining chips, but abrasive Si particles favour polished-flute or PCD tooling for long runs.
Can 296.0 be welded?
Fusion welding is not recommended (hot-cracking with 4–5% Cu); repair by 4145/4043 filler only where qualified, or use mechanical fasteners/adhesives.
Can 296.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Permanent-mold (and sand) casting alloy with good fluidity and pressure tightness; provide generous risers and directional solidification to avoid Cu-rich shrinkage porosity; not cold-formable.

What surface finishes work on 296.0?
Best protected by chromate conversion plus primer/paint; anodizing gives dark mottled color due to Cu/Si, hardcoat acceptable for wear only; polishes to a fair, not mirror, finish.
