What is 393.0?
393.0 (A03930) is a hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu-Ni casting alloy with roughly 22% Si, supplied in F, T5, T6 and T7 tempers within the ANSI/AA cast aluminum series. Engineers choose it for very low thermal expansion, high wear resistance and a 250 °C service ceiling; typical forms are permanent-mold, low-pressure and squeeze-cast pistons and liners at 275 MPa yield, 290 MPa tensile and HB 140. The limits are 0.7% elongation, poor fusion weldability, thermal conductivity of 130 W/m·K and a machinability score of 22 that forces diamond tooling. Where ductility matters more than wear, 390.0 is the nearer casting choice. 393.0 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 555°C (1,031 °F). 393.0 has a yield strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) — stronger than 70% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 0.7% and the elastic modulus is 88 GPa (12.8 Msi).

Working with 393.0
Is 393.0 easy to machine?
Treat as an abrasive metal-matrix composite: PCD or CVD-diamond tooling, high speed / light feed, flood coolant; carbide life is measured in minutes.
Can 393.0 be welded?
Poor — fusion welding causes hot cracking and coarse Si; repair only by specialized TIG with 4047/4145 filler and preheat, or avoid entirely.
Can 393.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Permanent mold, low-pressure or squeeze casting with phosphorus refinement, ~750–800 °C pour and controlled cooling to keep primary Si fine and evenly dispersed; not a die-casting-friendly or wrought alloy.
