What is A444.0?

A444.0 is an Al-Si7 casting alloy in the ANSI/AA 4xx.x family, supplied without deliberate copper or magnesium additions, so it is used as-cast (F) or in T4 rather than precipitation hardened. Engineers pick it where impact resistance and ductility matter more than strength — 21% elongation, 159 MPa tensile, 62 MPa yield, 44 HB — and it pours well as sand and permanent-mold castings, with 151 W/m·K thermal conductivity and 41% IACS. Strength is low and service is limited to about 150 °C; for load-bearing castings A356.0-T6 is the usual step up. A444.0 has a density of 2.68 g/cm³ (0.0968 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of aluminum grades. It melts at 577°C (1,071 °F). A444.0 has a yield strength of 62 MPa (8.99 ksi) and a tensile strength of 159 MPa (23.1 ksi) — weaker than 93% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 21% and the elastic modulus is 71 GPa (10.3 Msi).

Working with A444.0

Is A444.0 easy to machine?

Very soft and gummy — use sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed, generous rake and flood coolant or MQL to avoid built-up edge and torn threads.

Can A444.0 be welded?

Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with 4043 filler; repair welds need no post-weld heat treatment since the alloy is not precipitation strengthened.

Can A444.0 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent fluidity for permanent-mold (and sand) casting with Sr/Na modification and Ti grain refinement; unusually tolerant of straightening or local bending after casting.
