What is 851.0?
851.0 (A08510) is a nickel-modified Al-Sn-Cu bearing casting alloy developed from 850.0 to raise load capacity while keeping the soft tin phase that provides embeddability and low friction. Typical forms are cast bushings, bearing shells and heavy-duty plain bearings finished by boring and honing, with 76 MPa yield, 140 MPa tensile, 5% elongation, 45 HB and 71 GPa modulus. Elongation is lower than 850.0, fusion welding is not possible and service is limited to 150 °C; step up to 852.0 for the highest fatigue duty. 851.0 has a density of 2.83 g/cm³ (0.102 lb/in³), heavier than 91% of aluminum grades. It melts at 227°C (441 °F). 851.0 has a yield strength of 76 MPa (11 ksi) and a tensile strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) — weaker than 90% of aluminum grades. Working with 851.0
Is 851.0 easy to machine?
Very free-cutting: soft Sn phase breaks chips; use sharp polished carbide tools, high speed, light feed and flood coolant to avoid smearing on bearing surfaces.
Can 851.0 be welded?
Essentially unweldable by fusion methods — tin promotes severe hot cracking; repair by mechanical means or replace the casting.
Can 851.0 be formed, bent or molded?
Permanent-mold (gravity die) and sand casting both practical; avoid slow cooling that coarsens the tin network, and pour clean, degassed metal to keep bearing surface porosity low.
851.0 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
