What is C86300?
C86300 is a high-strength cast manganese bronze — commercially called manganese bronze, metallurgically a high-zinc brass alloyed with aluminium, iron and manganese — reaching about 820 MPa tensile, 470 MPa yield and 225 HB as cast, the strongest of the standard cast copper alloys. It is specified for heavy-duty worm gears, screw-down nuts, bridge bearing plates, hydraulic cylinder parts and mill bushings carrying high contact stress, in as-cast, permanent-mould, centrifugal and continuous cast forms. Limits are poor machinability (score 25, roughly 8 % of free-cutting brass), limited ductility and impact toughness, and sensitivity to dezincification and stress-corrosion cracking; avoid ammonia atmospheres and stagnant seawater, where C95500 is the usual substitute. C86300 has a density of 7.65 g/cm³ (0.276 lb/in³), lighter than 91% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 862°C (1,584 °F). C86300 has a yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 820 MPa (119 ksi) — stronger than 87% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).

Working with C86300
Is C86300 easy to machine?
Tough and gummy-to-abrasive (rating ≈8 vs free-cutting brass): use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, moderate speed with heavy feed and generous coolant; hard Fe/Al phases accelerate tool wear.
Can C86300 be welded?
Poor to fair — GTAW with matching aluminium-bronze/Mn-bronze filler and preheat is possible for repair, but the alumina film, zinc fumes and cracking sensitivity make production welding inadvisable; do not oxy-fuel weld.
Can C86300 be formed, bent or molded?
Casting alloy only: short freezing range needs chilled, well-fed gating and risering; not cold formable, but hot working near 700–750 °C is feasible for wrought analogues.
