What is C84200?

C84200 is a leaded semi-red brass casting alloy in the C83000–C89999 family, with a higher lead content that raises machinability to roughly 80 % of C36000. Foundries use it for general-purpose valves, fittings and pump housings, where as-cast values of 241 MPa tensile, 103 MPa yield, 27 % elongation, 55 HB and 16.4 % IACS are typical. It cannot be fusion welded, and solidification shrinkage near 1.5 % calls for adequate risering. Where lead content is restricted, C87500 silicon brass is the usual substitute. C84200 has a density of 8.6 g/cm³ (0.311 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 843°C (1,549 °F). C84200 has a yield strength of 103 MPa (14.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 241 MPa (35 ksi) — weaker than 86% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 95 GPa (13.8 Msi).

Working with C84200

Is C84200 easy to machine?

Excellent free-machining behaviour (≈80 % of C36000); use sharp positive-rake carbide or HSS tooling, high speed, light feeds, and expect short chips from the lead phase.

Can C84200 be welded?

Fusion welding is not recommended — lead causes hot cracking and zinc fumes; join by soft soldering (excellent) or silver brazing with low-temperature filler and good ventilation.

Can C84200 be formed, bent or molded?

Foundry alloy only: good fluidity for thin plumbing sections, moderate shrinkage (~1.5 %), needs adequate risering and clean, degassed melt to avoid tin-oxide dross and micro-porosity.

What surface finishes work on C84200?

Takes electroplated nickel/chrome and tin plate readily, buffs to a bright brass finish (lead phase limits true mirror polish); lacquer or chromate to prevent tarnish — anodizing not applicable.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on copper alloy parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

How much does C84200 cost?

C84200 is a high-cost copper alloy ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Yes — machinability is rated very good (80/100, better than 86% of copper alloy grades). Excellent free-machining behaviour (≈80 % of C36000); use sharp positive-rake carbide or HSS tooling, high speed, light feeds, and expect short chips from the lead phase.

Can C84200 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (20/100). Fusion welding is not recommended — lead causes hot cracking and zinc fumes; join by soft soldering (excellent) or silver brazing with low-temperature filler and good ventilation.

What surface finishes work on C84200?

Takes electroplated nickel/chrome and tin plate readily, buffs to a bright brass finish (lead phase limits true mirror polish); lacquer or chromate to prevent tarnish — anodizing not applicable.

Can C84200 be formed, bent or molded?

Foundry alloy only: good fluidity for thin plumbing sections, moderate shrinkage (~1.5 %), needs adequate risering and clean, degassed melt to avoid tin-oxide dross and micro-porosity.

What is the maximum service temperature of C84200?

C84200 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
