What is CC480K?

CC480K (CuSn10-C, equivalent to C90700 and ZCuSn10Pb1) is a classic 10 % tin cast bronze from the C90000–C95999 family, strengthened by the tin-rich matrix rather than by heat treatment. It is specified for heavily loaded sliding parts and pressure-tight castings, offering 330 MPa tensile, 190 MPa yield, 8 % elongation, 95 HB and service to 250 °C. Sand, continuous, centrifugal and permanent-mold castings are all available. Limits are low elongation, a machinability rating of 45 with stringy chips, poor fusion weldability and a wide freezing range that demands careful feeding; for higher strength choose cast aluminum bronze CC331G. CC480K has a density of 8.8 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³), heavier than 58% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 830°C (1,526 °F). CC480K has a yield strength of 190 MPa (27.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 57% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).

Working with CC480K

Is CC480K easy to machine?

Machines cleanly but with tough, stringy chips (≈20–30 % of AISI 1212); use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed, generous feed and light coolant to avoid smearing the soft matrix.

Can CC480K be welded?

Poor fusion weldability — hot-short and tin-oxide prone; repair by braze welding or TIG with matching Cu-Sn/phosphor-bronze filler and 150–250 °C preheat, then stress relieve.

Can CC480K be formed, bent or molded?

Cast-only alloy: wide freezing range needs chills, generous risers and directional solidification to avoid interdendritic shrink; no cold forming, hot working not practiced.

CC480K — frequently asked

What is CC480K used for?

CC480K is typically used for worm gears, heavy-duty bushings, bearings and pressure-tight valve bodies. In short: classic high-tin bearing bronze; good pressure tightness; poor fusion weldability.

What is the yield strength of CC480K?

CC480K has a typical yield strength of 190 MPa (27.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 57% of copper alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is CC480K easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (45/100, better than 64% of copper alloy grades). Machines cleanly but with tough, stringy chips (≈20–30 % of AISI 1212); use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed, generous feed and light coolant to avoid smearing the soft matrix.

Can CC480K be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Poor fusion weldability — hot-short and tin-oxide prone; repair by braze welding or TIG with matching Cu-Sn/phosphor-bronze filler and 150–250 °C preheat, then stress relieve.

What surface finishes work on CC480K?

Not anodizable; take a good mechanical polish, accepts tin, nickel or chrome plating, and can be chemically patinated or lacquered for architectural work.

Can CC480K be formed, bent or molded?

Cast-only alloy: wide freezing range needs chills, generous risers and directional solidification to avoid interdendritic shrink; no cold forming, hot working not practiced.

What is the maximum service temperature of CC480K?

CC480K is rated for continuous use to about 250°C (482 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between CC480K-GC and CC480K-GS?
