What is CC493K?

CC493K (CuSn7Zn4Pb7-C, C93200) is a leaded tin-zinc cast bronze, the European counterpart of SAE 660 bearing bronze, in which a dispersed free lead phase gives self-lubrication within a tin-strengthened copper matrix. Engineers choose it for plain bearings and bushings at 155 MPa yield, 300 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and 75 HB, poured as sand (GS), chill (GM), centrifugal (GZ) and continuous (GC) castings including stock bar and tube. The 6–8 % lead makes it effectively unweldable and restricts use in lead-controlled potable-water hardware; CC495K (C93700) is the nearest alternative where higher lead and lower strength are acceptable. CC493K has a density of 8.8 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³), heavier than 58% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 855°C (1,571 °F). CC493K has a yield strength of 155 MPa (22.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) — weaker than 65% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 97 GPa (14.1 Msi).

Working with CC493K

Is CC493K easy to machine?

Very free-cutting: use sharp positive-rake carbide or HSS, high speed, light feed and generous coolant; lead gives short chips and excellent bore finish — avoid smearing the lead phase with dull tools.

Can CC493K be welded?

Essentially unweldable by fusion due to 6–8 % Pb (hot cracking, lead fume); repair by brazing, soft soldering or mechanical means and use local extraction.

Can CC493K be formed, bent or molded?

Cast-only alloy — excellent sand, chill, centrifugal and continuous castability with wide freezing range; feed heavy sections well to avoid interdendritic shrinkage, no cold forming.

What surface finishes work on CC493K?

Machined running surfaces are normally left bare and oil-grooved; can be tin- or nickel-plated, chemically patinated or lightly polished, but lead inclusions limit mirror finish.
