What is C87500?
C87500 is a silicon brass casting alloy (CC761S, ASTM B584) used as a low-lead alternative to leaded red and yellow brasses. It offers the highest strength of this group — 440 MPa tensile, 225 MPa yield, 18 % elongation and 100 HB — together with good corrosion resistance, thin-wall castability and, unusually for a cast brass, good weldability. Machinability is only 40–50 % of free-cutting brass, electrical conductivity is low at 6.7 % IACS, and service is limited to about 200 °C. C83600 remains easier and cheaper to machine where lead is acceptable. C87500 has a density of 8.28 g/cm³ (0.299 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 821°C (1,510 °F). C87500 has a yield strength of 225 MPa (32.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — stronger than 50% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).
What is C87500 used for?

Working with C87500
Is C87500 easy to machine?
Machines at roughly 40–50 % of free-cutting brass — use sharp positive-rake carbide, generous coolant and expect gummier, stringier chips than leaded brass.
Can C87500 be welded?
Good with GMAW/GTAW using silicon-bronze (ERCuSi-A) filler and low heat input; oxyacetylene is only fair due to silicon oxide film — clean thoroughly and avoid overheating.
Can C87500 be formed, bent or molded?
A casting alloy only: excellent fluidity for thin walls in sand, permanent-mold and die casting; degas and minimize turbulence to avoid silicon-oxide inclusions, and use directional solidification/chills for pressure-tight parts.
