What is CC763S?

CC763S (CuZn32Al2Mn2Fe1-C, closely equivalent to C86200) is a high-tensile aluminium-manganese cast brass in which Al, Mn and Fe additions strengthen an alpha-beta zinc brass matrix, listed within the EN cast copper-alloy family. Engineers specify it for engineering castings that need strength plus seawater tolerance: 300 MPa yield, 640 MPa tensile, 14 % elongation and 150 HB in sand, chill, centrifugal and continuous cast forms (GS, GM, GZ, GC). Limits are a service ceiling near 200 °C, poor fusion weldability from zinc volatilisation, and machinability roughly one third that of free-cutting C36000. Where higher strength is required, CC764S is the direct step up. CC763S has a density of 7.9 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), lighter than 88% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 880°C (1,616 °F). CC763S has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) — stronger than 61% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 14% and the elastic modulus is 102 GPa (14.8 Msi).

Working with CC763S

Is CC763S easy to machine?

Machines like a tough alpha-beta brass, roughly one-third the ease of C36000 — use sharp carbide, positive rake, 0.1–0.3 mm/rev feeds and generous coolant; chips are gummy and Fe-rich particles accelerate tool wear.

Can CC763S be welded?

Poor fusion weldability: zinc volatilisation and hot cracking; if unavoidable use MIG/TIG with aluminium-bronze filler, low heat input, preheat 150–200 °C and good fume extraction — brazing or mechanical joining is preferred.

Can CC763S be formed, bent or molded?

A casting alloy only — pour at ~1000–1050 °C with degassed, well-fluxed melt, generous risers and chills for its short freezing range; no cold forming, but hot working around 700–750 °C is possible for wrought analogues.

What surface finishes work on CC763S?

Not anodisable; takes a bright machined or polished finish, and can be tin, nickel or chromium plated after thorough oxide/Al-film removal — passivation or lacquer helps prevent tarnish.
