What is C83300?
C83300 (CC490K) is a high-copper leaded red brass casting alloy, with lead added for free machining and a copper-rich matrix that keeps conductivity high at 145 W/m·K and 32 % IACS. Engineers choose it for electrical and plumbing castings that must be pressure tight and easy to machine, with 69 MPa yield, 234 MPa tensile, 35 % elongation and 35 HB in sand, permanent-mould and continuous cast conditions (M01, M02, M03, M05, M07). Strength is low, arc welding is not recommended because of lead, and lead content restricts use in potable-water parts under low-lead rules. Unleaded silicon or aluminium cast brasses are the usual substitutes for drinking-water duty. C83300 has a density of 8.8 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³), heavier than 58% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,010°C (1,850 °F). C83300 has a yield strength of 69 MPa (10 ksi) and a tensile strength of 234 MPa (33.9 ksi) — weaker than 96% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 96.5 GPa (14 Msi).

Working with C83300
Is C83300 easy to machine?
Excellent free-machining behaviour (≈90% of C36000) — use sharp positive-rake tools, light feeds and flood coolant; lead chips break cleanly but require dust/fume control.
Can C83300 be welded?
Arc welding is not recommended because of lead; soldering and silver brazing are excellent, oxyacetylene/braze repair of castings is fair with low-fuming filler.
Can C83300 be formed, bent or molded?
A casting alloy only — good fluidity and pressure tightness in sand, permanent-mold and continuous casting; feed with generous risers due to the wide freezing range.
C83300 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Cuhigh Cu gives the elevated conductivity | 92 – 94 | 93 |
| Sn | 1 – 2 | 1.5 |
| Pbmachinability and pressure tightness; not potable-water (lead-free) compliant | 1 – 2 | 1.5 |
| Fe | ≤ 0.3 | |
| Zn | ≥ 2 (balance) |
What surface finishes work on C83300?
Takes bright buffing, tin, nickel and chrome plating well; anodizing is not applicable — protect with lacquer, benzotriazole or chemical patina for architectural use.
