What is C96400?
C96400 (CC381H, CuNi30Fe1Mn1-C) is the high-nickel 70-30 cast copper-nickel, giving higher strength and better seawater erosion resistance than the 90-10 cast grade. Default properties are 265 MPa yield, 470–480 MPa class tensile at 480 MPa, 25% elongation and 140 HB, with service to 300 °C and 4.5% IACS electrical conductivity; it is produced by sand, centrifugal, investment and continuous casting. Conductivity is low and the alloy machines gummy, so cycle times and tooling cost run above leaded bronzes. For higher strength in the same family, consider C96900 or the age-hardening C96600. C96400 has a density of 8.94 g/cm³ (0.323 lb/in³), heavier than 90% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,171°C (2,140 °F). C96400 has a yield strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — stronger than 55% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 152 GPa (22 Msi).

Working with C96400
Is C96400 easy to machine?
Gummy and work-hardening — use sharp, positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds, rigid setups, low-to-moderate speeds and flood coolant; never dwell or rub.
Can C96400 be welded?
Very good with GTAW/GMAW/SMAW using 70-30 CuNi (ERCuNi / ENiCu) filler; keep interpass temperature low, clean all oil and sulphur, no preheat needed.
Can C96400 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as castings — sand, centrifugal, investment and continuous casting all practical; wide freezing range demands directional solidification, generous risers and chills.
