What is CC760S?

CC760S (CuZn15As-C) is a low-zinc alpha brass casting alloy with an arsenic addition that suppresses dezincification in water and marine service. Default-condition properties are 90 MPa yield, 220 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and 55 HB, with 32 % IACS electrical conductivity and service to 200 °C; it is cast by sand (GS), permanent-mould (GM), centrifugal (GZ) and continuous (GC) routes. Strength is low compared with the leaded and silicon brasses, and the unleaded alpha structure machines gummily at roughly 30 % of free-cutting brass throughput. Where higher strength with lead-free water contact is needed, CC761S is the nearer choice. CC760S has a density of 8.75 g/cm³ (0.316 lb/in³), lighter than 51% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,000°C (1,832 °F). CC760S has a yield strength of 90 MPa (13.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 220 MPa (31.9 ksi) — weaker than 88% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 100 GPa (14.5 Msi).

Working with CC760S

Is CC760S easy to machine?

Unleaded alpha brass machines gummy with long stringy chips — use sharp positive-rake carbide, high speed, ample coolant; expect ~30 % of free-cutting brass throughput.

Can CC760S be welded?

Best joined by brazing or silver soldering; TIG/oxy-fuel welding possible with silicon-bronze or CuZn filler but zinc fuming, porosity and colour mismatch require good ventilation and preheat control.

Can CC760S be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent casting fluidity in sand, permanent mould, centrifugal and continuous casting; degas and skim to control zinc loss and dross, feed generously and avoid aluminium contamination.
