What is CC492K?

CC492K (CuSn7Zn2Pb3-C, C92200) is a leaded tin bronze with balanced tin, zinc and lead, similar in character to Navy-M bronze grades. The lead phase gives a machinability score of 80 and the alloy casts pressure-tight, so it is used for valve and pump bodies in steam and water service, as sand (GS), gravity die (GM), centrifugal (GZ) and continuous (GC) castings at 150 MPa yield, 290 MPa tensile, 14 % elongation and 80 HB. Service is limited to 230 °C and fusion welding is unreliable. Choose CC483K for higher wear capacity, or CC491K gunmetal for lower cost. CC492K has a density of 8.75 g/cm³ (0.316 lb/in³), lighter than 51% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 850°C (1,562 °F). CC492K has a yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) — weaker than 69% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 14% and the elastic modulus is 98 GPa (14.2 Msi).

Working with CC492K

Is CC492K easy to machine?

Excellent free-machining behaviour from the lead phase; use sharp positive-rake carbide or HSS tooling, high speed, light feed, soluble-oil coolant — chips break short.

Can CC492K be welded?

Fusion welding is unreliable because of lead and tin segregation; use brazing or soft soldering, or braze-repair castings with low-fuming bronze rod and preheat.

Can CC492K be formed, bent or molded?

Cast-only alloy with a wide freezing range — feed heavily with risers/chills, pour ~1100–1150 °C, and degas to avoid tin-sweat and microporosity in pressure parts.

What surface finishes work on CC492K?

Takes fine turning and burnishing well, can be tin-, nickel- or chrome-plated after thorough degreasing; mirror polishing is limited by the free lead, patinating and clear-lacquering are common.
