What is 40CrNiMoA?

40CrNiMoA is a Ni-Cr-Mo low-alloy steel equivalent to AISI 4340 (SNCM439, 34CrNiMo6/1.6582), heat-treatable to ultra-high strength with deep hardenability. It is used for critical aerospace and heavy-machinery shafts, and is stocked as bar and forging stock in annealed, normalized, HR, CD and Q&T tempers from 28-32 HRC to 48-52 HRC; the default Q&T condition gives 950 MPa yield, 1080 MPa tensile, 16% elongation and 320 HB (34 HRC), with service to 400 °C. The high carbon equivalent makes welding a preheat-and-re-temper operation, machinability is 42, and the steel has no inherent corrosion resistance. 4140 is the easier, cheaper alternative below this strength level. 40CrNiMoA has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 40CrNiMoA has a yield strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,080 MPa (157 ksi) — stronger than 91% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with 40CrNiMoA

Is 40CrNiMoA easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed or ≤32 HRC condition with rigid setups, sharp carbide and generous coolant; above 40 HRC switch to CBN/ceramic turning or grinding, and rough before final temper where possible.

Can 40CrNiMoA be welded?

High carbon equivalent means preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen filler (e.g. ER100S/ER110S or matching), interpass control and immediate PWHT/re-temper; avoid welding parts already at high hardness.

Can 40CrNiMoA be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1100–1200 °C, finish above 900 °C and normalize afterwards; cold forming is limited to the annealed condition and mild bends only.

What surface finishes work on 40CrNiMoA?

Not anodizable — protect with black oxide, phosphate + oil, Zn or Cd plating, hard chrome, or gas nitriding (surface 550–650 HV); bake 190–220 °C after electroplating high-hardness parts to relieve hydrogen.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).
