Spheroidize annealed | Pick for cold heading, cold extrusion or heavy cold forming of gear blanks and shafts. | 330 | 520 | 30 | 145 HB | 7.9 % IACS |
ADefault Solution annealed | Default stocked bar condition: softest reliable state for turning, hobbing and shaping before carburizing. | 355 | 560 | 26 | 163 HB | — |
Hot rolled | Cheapest mill condition for parts that will be fully heat treated anyway; hardness scatter and decarb layer must be machined off. | 400 | 620 | 22 | 179 HB | — |
Normalized | Standard pre-treatment before carburizing: refines grain, homogenizes forgings and stabilizes distortion. | 450 | 700 | 20 | 207 HB | — |
Cold drawn | Bright, size-accurate bar for small shafts and pins made on automatics; higher yield but lower ductility. | 580 | 700 | 12 | 207 HB | — |
Quenched and tempered | Use when the part is not carburized but needs a tough medium-strength body (shafts, fasteners, links). | 740 | 930 | 18 | 29 HRC | — |
Induction hardened | Used where only a journal or tooth flank needs hardness; case is shallower and softer than carburizing because base carbon is low. | 760 | 950 | 13 | 45 HRC | 7.5 % IACS |
Carbonitrided, quenched and tempered | Choose for thin (0.2–0.5 mm) very hard cases on small gears/pins at lower process temperature and less distortion than gas carburizing. | 850 | 1,100 | 10 | 61 HRC | 7.5 % IACS |
Carburized, quenched and low-temperature tempered | The service condition for gears and splines: hard wear/pitting-resistant case with compressive residual stress over a tough core. | 880 | 1,150 | 11 | 60 HRC | — |
What is SCM418?
SCM418 is a JIS chromium-molybdenum carburizing steel close to AISI 4118, with slightly higher carbon than SCM415 for a stronger core in medium-duty automotive gears. Working with SCM418
Is SCM418 easy to machine?
Turn, hob and shape in the annealed/normalized state (≈65 % of AISI 1212) with carbide at 120–180 m/min; after carburizing only grinding or hard turning with CBN is practical.
Can SCM418 be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen consumables plus 200–300 °C preheat and 600–650 °C stress relief; never weld carburized surfaces.
Can SCM418 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–1200 °C then normalize; cold heading and extrusion require spheroidize-annealed CHQ stock.
