What is 1547?
1547 (UNS G15470, formerly 1047) is a higher-carbon, high-manganese free-machining bar steel that adds hardness and wear resistance over 1541 while keeping workable turning behaviour. It is used for machine and spline shafts and other wear-resistant machined components, and is stocked hot-rolled, normalized, annealed, cold-drawn, annealed-and-cold-drawn, induction-hardened and quenched and tempered to 30 or 40 HRC. Typical values are 724 MPa yield, 827 MPa tensile, 8 % elongation, 241 HB and service to 400 °C, with machinability about 55 % of 1212. Weldability and cold formability are both poor; 1541 is the easier grade to form and weld. 1547 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 1547 has a yield strength of 724 MPa (105 ksi) and a tensile strength of 827 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 82% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1547
Is 1547 easy to machine?
Machines like a medium-carbon steel at ~55 % of 1212 — use rigid setups, carbide at 90–140 m/min, and expect better chip control in the cold-drawn or spheroidize-annealed condition.
Can 1547 be welded?
Poor weldability (CE ≈ 0.75): preheat 200–260 °C, low-hydrogen consumables and post-weld stress relief/temper are needed to avoid HAZ martensite cracking.
Can 1547 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formability is limited by carbon and Mn — bend generously (≥3t) after anneal, or hot form at 900–1200 °C; ideal for hot upsetting and roll forming of blanks.
