What is AF1410?
AF1410 (UNS K92571) is a nickel-cobalt-chromium secondary-hardening ultra-high-strength steel developed for landing gear and arresting-hook shanks, delivering 1520 MPa yield and 1660 MPa tensile at 48 HRC with 16 % elongation. Its low carbon content gives high fracture toughness at the 1600–1700 MPa strength level and better weldability (score 60) than 300M or 4340; it is available as forgings, bar and plate. It is not corrosion resistant, is limited to about 400 °C service, and machines slowly (score 22). AerMet 100 or AerMet 310 is the step up when higher strength is required. AF1410 has a density of 7.89 g/cm³ (0.285 lb/in³), heavier than 93% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). AF1410 has a yield strength of 1,520 MPa (220 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,660 MPa (241 ksi) — stronger than 97% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 196 GPa (28.4 Msi).

Working with AF1410
Is AF1410 easy to machine?
Rough machine in the overaged/annealed condition (~31 HRC); finish at 48 HRC with rigid setups, carbide or CBN, low speed and heavy positive rake, and leave grind stock on critical surfaces.
Can AF1410 be welded?
Better weldable than 300M/4340 thanks to the low carbon: GTAW/EBW with matching filler, clean dry conditions, no preheat required, and re-age at the original aging temperature after welding.
Can AF1410 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot work 1050–1150 °C then normalize; cold forming is impractical in any hardened condition — form only in the annealed state with generous radii.
