What is 41CrAlMo7-10?
41CrAlMo7-10 (1.8509) is a European chromium-molybdenum-aluminium nitriding steel, alloyed with roughly 1 % aluminium so that gas nitriding forms a very hard, deep case on a quenched and tempered core. Engineers select it over 34CrAlMo5 for greater case depth and higher core strength; it is supplied as Q&T bar, forged blanks and tube, typically 800 MPa yield, 1050 MPa tensile, 14 % elongation and 320 HB (34 HRC), with service to 500 °C. It is effectively non-weldable, machinability is low (score 40), and the steel has no inherent corrosion resistance, so the nitrided case or a phosphate/oxide finish must carry that duty. 31CrMo12 is the nearest alternative when higher core strength is needed. 41CrAlMo7-10 has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 93% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 41CrAlMo7-10 has a yield strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) — stronger than 86% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 14% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 41CrAlMo7-10
Is 41CrAlMo7-10 easy to machine?
Machine fully in the +QT condition with coated carbide at moderate speed and rigid setups; leave only 0.05–0.10 mm grinding stock because the nitrided case cannot be heavily removed.
Can 41CrAlMo7-10 be welded?
Essentially not weldable in service condition — high carbon plus ~1 % Al gives hard, crack-prone HAZ; if unavoidable use high preheat, matching low-hydrogen filler and immediate stress relief.
Can 41CrAlMo7-10 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–850 °C followed by slow cooling and soft annealing; cold forming is impractical at 300+ HB.
