What is 20CrMoV5-7?
20CrMoV5-7 (1.8503, also 20CrMoVA) is a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium case-hardening and nitriding steel in the EN 10083/10084 family, where the low carbon core is hardened and the surface is enriched by nitriding or carburising. It is chosen for gears and shafts that need a hard, wear-resistant case with tough core, and is supplied as bar and forgings in +A, +N, +QT800, +QT900, +C, NIT, CH and +U conditions; the default Q&T state gives 700 MPa yield, 880 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and about 270 HB (27 HRC) with service to 500 °C. Machinability is moderate (score 45) and the finished case cannot be economically cut, so all machining precedes heat treatment. 31CrMoV9 is the usual alternative when a thicker nitrided case is wanted. 20CrMoV5-7 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 20CrMoV5-7 has a yield strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) and a tensile strength of 880 MPa (128 ksi) — stronger than 81% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 20CrMoV5-7
Is 20CrMoV5-7 easy to machine?
Rough machine in the annealed state; in Q&T condition use rigid setups, coated carbide at moderate speed and finish-grind after nitriding/carburising since the case is not economically machinable.
Can 20CrMoV5-7 be welded?
Weldable with matching low-alloy Cr-Mo-V consumables using 250–350 °C preheat, controlled interpass and PWHT at 650–700 °C; avoid welding after nitriding.
Can 20CrMoV5-7 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge at about 1100→850 °C with slow cooling and subsequent normalising or annealing; cold forming only in the soft-annealed state and only for modest deformation.
