What is 20MnNiCrMo3-2?
20MnNiCrMo3-2 (1.6522, 20CrMnMo) is a case-hardening Mn-Ni-Cr-Mo steel from the EN carburizing family, machined soft and then carburized to give a hard wear surface over a tough low-carbon core. In the annealed or treated-to-hardness condition it provides 350 MPa yield, 560 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and about 180 HB (88 HRB), and is supplied as bar, tube and forged gear blanks. The case reaches roughly 60 HRC and must be finish-ground, so grinding stock has to be planned into the part; the steel has no corrosion resistance and cannot be welded after carburizing. For lighter-duty carburized parts, 20NiCrMo2-2 (8620) is the nearest alternative. 20MnNiCrMo3-2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 20MnNiCrMo3-2 has a yield strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) — weaker than 74% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).
What is 20MnNiCrMo3-2 used for?
- Carburized gears
- Bearing components
- Transmission shafts
Advantages
- Low embodied carbon — 1.9 kg CO₂/kg, better than 92% of steel grades
- Easy to machine — 62/100, better than 89% of steel grades

Working with 20MnNiCrMo3-2
Is 20MnNiCrMo3-2 easy to machine?
Machine in +A/+FP/+TH at 150–220 HB with coated carbide (Vc ≈ 120–200 m/min); leave 0.1–0.3 mm grinding stock on carburized surfaces since the 60 HRC case must be finish-ground.
Can 20MnNiCrMo3-2 be welded?
Weldable before carburizing with low-hydrogen consumables, 150–250 °C preheat and stress relief; welding on the carburized case is not recommended (high-carbon HAZ cracking).
Can 20MnNiCrMo3-2 be formed, bent or molded?
Best cold-headed/extruded in the +AC spheroidized condition; hot forge at 1100–1180 °C, finish above 900 °C, then normalize or soft anneal before machining.
