Annealed + cold drawn bar | Cold-drawn bar stock for tight tolerance and better surface before aging; the cold work also raises the final aged strength slightly. | 980 | 1,120 | 12 | 34 HRC | 3.4 % IACS |
As welded + post-weld aged | Weldment condition: matching filler, no preheat, single post-weld age restores about 85–95 % of parent aged strength. | 1,250 | 1,330 | 8 | 41 HRC | 3.8 % IACS |

What is 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel?
18Ni(200) maraging steel (K92810, ASTM A538 Grade A, Vascomax C200, 1.6354) is an Fe-18Ni-Co-Mo alloy strengthened by intermetallic precipitation during a low-temperature age rather than by carbon. It is the lowest-strength, highest-toughness grade of the 18Ni family: 1400 MPa yield, 1450 MPa tensile, 12% elongation, 43 HRC (400 HB) and 186 GPa modulus, with only about 0.05 % growth on aging so parts can be finished near-net before hardening. Corrosion resistance is low (score 25), service is limited to 400 °C and machinability is 30. Move to 18Ni(250) or 18Ni(350) when higher strength is needed. 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel has a density of 8 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³), heavier than 95% of steel grades. Working with 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel
Is 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed condition with sharp carbide tooling, rigid setups, positive rake and flood coolant; work-hardens and is gummy — expect ~50 % of 4340 annealed feed rates, and only finish-grind/EDM after aging.
Can 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel be welded?
Excellent weldability with matching maraging filler by GTAW/EBW/laser — no preheat, low heat input, clean joint prep, then a single 480 °C/3–6 h post-weld age to restore strength.
Can 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel be formed, bent or molded?
Form, bend, deep draw or roll in the soft annealed state (18 % elongation); aging causes only ~0.05 % linear shrinkage so tight-tolerance parts can be finished before hardening.

What surface finishes work on 18Ni(200) Maraging Steel?
Takes a mirror polish (VIM/VAR clean steel) and is nitrided for wear; not corrosion resistant, so use passivation plus cadmium/electroless-nickel plating or paint, and bake after plating to avoid hydrogen embrittlement.
