What is SCr435?

SCr435 is a higher-carbon JIS chromium quenched-and-tempered steel used for tougher, higher-strength shafts and gears than SCr430. The default Q&T condition gives about 830 MPa yield, 980 MPa tensile, 17 % elongation and 293 HB (31 HRC), with tempers on file from 25–30 HRC to 38–42 HRC plus induction hardening for local wear surfaces. Service is limited to about 400 °C, machinability drops to a score of 50, and weldability is restricted; the steel has no corrosion resistance and must be coated. SCM435 is the nearest alternative where molybdenum-assisted hardenability in larger sections is needed. SCr435 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). SCr435 has a yield strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) and a tensile strength of 980 MPa (142 ksi) — stronger than 87% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 17% and the elastic modulus is 206 GPa (29.9 Msi).

Working with SCr435

Is SCr435 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed or normalized state (≈55–65 % of AISI 1212); above 32 HRC use carbide with rigid setups and finish-grind after hardening.

Can SCr435 be welded?

Restricted weldability — preheat 200–300 °C, low-hydrogen consumables, and temper/stress-relieve at 550–650 °C immediately after welding to avoid HAZ cracking.

Can SCr435 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1100–1200 °C and cool slowly or normalize; cold heading and bending are practical only in the spheroidize-annealed condition.
