What is 41NiCrMo7-3-2?
41NiCrMo7-3-2 (1.6563) is a high-hardenability Ni-Cr-Mo through-hardening steel close to AISI 4340, quenched and tempered to a uniform strength level in large cross-sections. In the default condition it reaches 850 MPa yield, 1100 MPa tensile, 13 % elongation and about 330 HB (35 HRC), with service to 400 °C, and is supplied as bar, heavy forgings and pre-hardened blocks. Machinability is limited (score 42) and weldability is poor at a carbon equivalent of roughly 0.8–0.9, requiring 250–350 °C preheat and immediate PWHT; the steel also has no corrosion resistance and needs plating or paint. Where a hard case on a soft core is preferred, use a carburizing grade such as 18CrNiMo7-6. 41NiCrMo7-3-2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 41NiCrMo7-3-2 has a yield strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) — stronger than 88% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 13% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).
