What is X12CrMo5?
X12CrMo5 (1.7362, A182 F5) is a martensitic 5 % Cr-Mo steel for elevated-temperature valve and flange components, supplied isothermally annealed (+I), normalized and tempered (+NT) or quenched and tempered (+QT). Typical properties are 460 MPa yield, 660 MPa tensile, 21 % elongation and 195 HB (17 HRC), with a maximum service temperature of 600 °C and good creep resistance in forged bodies, flanges and fittings. Corrosion resistance is limited (score 25) — it is not stainless — and both welding (score 40) and cold forming (score 32) are restricted by the hardening martensitic matrix. Use 13CrMo4-5 for easier welding at lower temperatures, or a 9Cr grade such as P91 for higher creep demands. X12CrMo5 has a density of 7.78 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³), lighter than 91% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). X12CrMo5 has a yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 660 MPa (95.7 ksi) — stronger than 55% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 21% and the elastic modulus is 213 GPa (30.9 Msi).

Working with X12CrMo5
Is X12CrMo5 easy to machine?
Machine in the annealed or N+T condition with rigid setups, sharp carbide (coated grades) and generous coolant; the 5%Cr matrix work-hardens and is abrasive, so cut speeds roughly 55–60 % of AISI 1212.
Can X12CrMo5 be welded?
Weldable with matching 5Cr-0.5Mo (E502/ER80S-B6) consumables, but requires 200–300 °C preheat/interpass, low-hydrogen practice and PWHT at 700–760 °C to avoid hard martensite and hydrogen cracking.
Can X12CrMo5 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge at 1100–1180 °C, finish above 900 °C and cool slowly or normalize; cold forming is limited to gentle bends because of high yield ratio and quench-hardening tendency.

What surface finishes work on X12CrMo5?
Not stainless — protect with phosphating plus high-temperature paint, aluminizing or thermal spray for outdoor/wet service; electroplating requires stress-relief bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement.
