What is 33NiCrMoV14-5?
33NiCrMoV14-5 (1.6956) is a high-nickel Ni-Cr-Mo-V quenched and tempered alloy steel in the EN 10083/10250 forging family, developed for large, highly stressed rotating forgings. In the default +QT condition it reaches about 1050 MPa yield, 1250 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation and 375 HB (40 HRC), with service to roughly 400 °C, and is available as large bar, rotor forgings and nitrided variants. The high carbon equivalent makes it a poor welding grade and machinability is low (score 32) once hardened; 28NiCrMoV8-5 is the lower-strength, easier-to-machine alternative in the same family. 33NiCrMoV14-5 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 33NiCrMoV14-5 has a yield strength of 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,250 MPa (181 ksi) — stronger than 93% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with 33NiCrMoV14-5
Is 33NiCrMoV14-5 easy to machine?
Rough machine in the annealed/normalized state; in +QT (≈40 HRC) use rigid setups, coated carbide or CBN at reduced speed and heavy coolant, and finish-grind bearing surfaces.
Can 33NiCrMoV14-5 be welded?
Poor weldability due to high carbon equivalent — preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen matching or slightly softer filler, and immediate post-weld temper below the last tempering temperature.
Can 33NiCrMoV14-5 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1050–1150 °C with slow controlled cooling to avoid quench cracks; no practical cold forming, straightening only warm.
